Macao University of Tourism (UTM) Team Wins One Bronze Medal and Four Medals for Excellence at the 48th WorldSkills Competition

MACAU, October 6 - The 48th WorldSkills Competition was held in Shanghai from 22 to 27 September, gathering approximately 1,385 outstanding young competitors from 68 countries and regions. After several days of intense competition, students from the Macao University of Tourism (UTM) won one Bronze Medal and four Medals for Excellence, bringing honour to Macao.

Since 2015, UTM has been entrusted by the Labour Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government to serve as the representative entity for Macao’s participation in the WorldSkills Competition. This has involved the selection and training of competitors in the skills of Hotel Reception, Bakery, Pâtisserie and Confectionery, Restaurant Service, and Cooking. Seven new skills were introduced for this edition of the competition. Among them, UTM took part in the development of the brand-new skill of Retail Sales, participating in the construction of its framework and formulation of marking criteria from scratch. UTM helped implement the technical specifications for this new skill, laying a solid foundation for Macao’s participation in this newly added skill.

To prepare Macao competitors for this international competition, UTM actively leveraged its unique advantages by collaborating with industry partners and schools in other regions, developing comprehensive training programmes to enhance their skill levels. Ultimately, Cloe Carvalho Hoo, a student in Marketing and Brand Management, won the Bronze Medal in Retail Sales. Tou Cheok Lam, Choi Chi Ieng and Fu Ho I, students in Culinary Arts Management, together with Chan Hio Iao, a student in Tourism Business Management, won Medals for Excellence in Cooking, Bakery, Pâtisserie and Confectionery, and Hotel Reception respectively. In addition, Bianca Mak Correia, a student in Culinary Arts Management, won the Silver Medal in Restaurant Service at the WorldSkills Australia Global Skills Challenge in June this year.
